Idea – The City
The city is a place of coexistence and activity for many communities. The accumulation of public aspects of life takes shape in spaces rooted in ancient culture. Greek cities – “Polis” – were characterized by grand theaters, temples, and agoras. Guided by the ideals of democracy, these spaces built the identity of their respective communities.
Modern public-use buildings should reect the spirit of the times and address the challenges facing today’s civilization: environmental pollution, extreme weather events, rising temperatures, epidemic threats, fossil fuel depletion, increasing building maintenance costs. Properly understood, these challenges should drive the development of intelligent and sustainable cities.
Buildings that form city spaces should no longer be mere monuments. The timeless value of spaces they create, combined with thoughtful façade design, fosters a sense of place. Beautiful, urbanistically and architecturally rened spaces inuence the acceptance of investments by local communities. Atmospheric interiors, narrow streets, plazas, scenic views, open spaces, and green squares are what captivate us in medieval cities, which are so often visited and admired.
Concept
The campus of the University of Economics at Rakowicka Street 27, together with the Carmelite Monastery at Rakowicka Street 18, represents the heritage of the Prince Aleksander Lubomirski Foundation.
The subsequent decades have left their mark on the campus’s urban fabric, with architecture that is stylistically and contextually diverse.
The main pedestrian axis of the University of Economics campus, ending with the Finance Pavilion building, opens northward to an area between the existing Pavilion H, the “Diamond” hall, and the army grounds wall. The atmosphere created by the existing buildings suggests inviting the surroundings into dialogue.
The proposal for the anniversary campus takes a different approach: instead of a freestanding building, the project emphasizes ecology and urban planning.
Human-scale design, cozy atmospheres created by walkways and streets, aim to humanize the space, creating a friendly environment for work, study, and relaxation.
The Jubilee Square – the entrance to the campus – is designed to invite exploration. “Broadway” – an alley leading northward to the Student Square – offers a less formal space, ideal for café meetings and casual gatherings.
